Is Fiverr Legit? – Get My Honest Review

This post may contain affiliate links for more info visit my disclosure page.

In this post, you will find out if Fiverr is legit and how exactly it works. We can agree that it is the most popular freelance platform on the internet and has many happy buyers. However, you can also read some cons of Fiverr.

What Is Fiverr?

Fiverr is a freelance platform that helps online business owners to find services for their sites and freelancers to start their online career or business. There are many different types of services and freelancers. I think that you can find the right person for any task that you need for your business.

Fiverr sellers create gigs. A gig is a service or a job at a fixed price. While a seller can apply directly to a request or send a message to a buyer, they are not able to get hired or sell a service if they have not created at least one gig.

Then, the clients browse the gigs that are interesting in ordering and choose the one they like. This is the main process of the site for sellers and buyers. It is simple and easy to get started, no matter what side you are. If everything has worked fine and you have chosen a gig, the freelancer will complete the order, and the client will review and approve it.

The good news is that Fiverr has thousands of sellers and buyers these days in many different niches. So, you can use Fiverr to earn some extra money or hire people for your business.

The bad news is that it is not everyone honest. I have tried Fiverr both as a seller and a client. From my experience, I know that you can find good and bad sellers. Also, most of the clients are people who you enjoy working with, but sometimes, you can face some problems here as well.

For this reason, there is a review system. You can check the previous feedback for every Fiverr member. If you do your research, you will avoid many of these problems.

Pros

  • It is easy to get started
  • There are many available services
  • Forum and good support
  • Different levels of expertise and pricing
  • You can earn extra money

Cons

  • There are some low-quality gigs
  • Most niches have a lot of competition

Who Is Fiverr For?

For Buyers:

If you run an online business and you need an extra hand, you can find many good freelancers on Fiverr. The price of the gigs depends on the level of the freelancer. However, if you do some research, you can find some good opportunities. This platform works well for short-term jobs. You can find many $5 gigs for simple tasks. They like to work with many different buyers for a quick job on each one.

For example, you can hire someone to create a logo, a small article, customize your site, create a video, etc. For a long-term project, it’s better to contact the freelancer to check if he/she is willing to do what you want.

Fiverr PRO seller

Also, you buy what you pay here. There are many complaints about the $5 gigs. Their level of work is not great. But this is why they ask only $5. If you want to hire an expert, you need to spend more money, and you can try the gigs with the PRO badge that is selected from Fiverr as top freelancers.

For Sellers:

Many people recommend Fiverr as an easy way to earn money online. In my opinion, it’s easy only when you know what to do. The fact is that if you get some good reviews, you will start getting more orders. However, if you sell your services for $5, you must sell many of them to go full-time.

It is not easy to get your first reviews. I would focus on the buyer requests, and some self-promotion could help. Next, make sure you can deliver what you promise. Fiverr is not a place for some extra bucks but a place where you can start an online business. So, make sure that your buyers are happy, and you get good reviews.

The only problem is that Fiverr has too many competitors in every niche. There are not any tips to avoid competition. You need to overcome it.

What Is Inside? – Services and Features

Starting from the services, you can find anything that is needed for an online business. Some website owners outsource on Fiverr a big part of their daily work.

Below are all the main categories:

  • Graphic and Design: Logos, business cards, flyers, etc.
  • Digital Marketing: Here you can find any service that can help you to attract visitors or make sales like SEO, social media marketing, email marketing, e-commerce, and more.
  • Writing and translation: Everything that can be relevant to writing, you can find it here. Some writers like the SEO writers can be found in the digital marketing category as well.
  • Video and Animation: If you want to create or edit a video, you can check some gigs here.
  • Programming and Tech: You can find WordPress services, gigs to build a site, chatbots, mobile apps, etc.
  • Business: You can get advice, tips, virtual assistants, consultants, etc.
  • Fun and Lifestyle: Fun videos and images, lessons, guides, etc.

If you do not find the service you want, you can post a request with your preferences. It will be posted on the site, and the sellers will be able to apply for it if they have an active gig on a relevant service. You can see that process here.

The sellers can easily create their gigs under the selling tab. Find more information here.

The last months have been added many features to make it easier to find what you are looking for. It helps the sellers as well, but their main focus is on the buyers. It makes sense because they make this platform to work. I like the Pro budge for those who want to hire the real experts and the Available Now option that shows who is online right now.

Does Fiverr Have Quality Support?

There are three ways to get help on Fiverr. The obvious one is to contact the support. Usually, they reply in a few hours. They can give you the information or the help you want when you are specific. Until now, I have sent them five times for minor issues, and they helped me all of them.

Next, they try to educate beginners about the platform and how they can get the maximum. The pages on the site are straightforward, and you can use it easily. Also, there are questions and answers parts on many pages, and they encourage the gigs to do the same.

Fiverr Forum

The third way is the forum. It is active with many members and updates daily. You can introduce yourself, ask questions, and read interesting threads.

It is available for both sellers and buyers, but I think the most active members of the forum are sellers. They discuss their gigs, problems and sometimes you can read some interesting guides and tips from more experienced members. The most common advice to new sellers is to work hard. Overall, I think that Fiverr has a great support system, and you can find a way to get help when you need it.

Is Fiverr Worth It?

When you are a business owner, you want to make sure that you will get quality services. To achieve that, you need to ask for specific things and test the freelancers. Also, before placing an order, you can contact them for more information.

This is what I recommend. Ask them a few questions about the service you are interested in ordering. You will figure out who can do the work as you want. Another good idea could be to ask for a sample.

Usually, the low-quality services are at low priced gigs. Sometimes, they have many positive reviews, and still they are not worth it. However, when you invest more money, you can expect a better job. In my opinion, Fiverr is one of the best places on the internet to hire freelancers. You just need to do some research before hiring someone.

Can You Make Money On Fiverr?

It’s a marketplace for online services. So yes, you can make money if you can attract some buyers. I have tested Fiverr for some months, made some sales and here is my opinion:

  1. It is not an easy or fast way to get started online.
  2. In the beginning, you need to send many requests per day before making a few sales. I would not expect more than 2-3 orders per week with a new account.
  3. You need to offer something with good value if you want orders in the beginning. For example, when someone sells a logo for $5, you can give two of them at the same price. Later, when you get traffic organically, you can offer them the standard services.
  4. Quality matters. You will not get good reviews for a poor job.

Compared to other ways to earn money, it does not sound like a great opportunity. The main problem is the tough competition from established gigs. But yes, you can go full time if you work hard.

My Final Verdict – Is Fiverr Legit?

Fiverr is legit for sure, but you can find a few gigs on the platform that are not worth your money. The same happens to all the big freelance platforms on the internet.

If you are not sure about a specific gig, check a sample of some previous jobs. Many freelancers are willing to prove that they can work for you and earn some extra money. There are different expertise levels and prices to find what you are looking for and good support to fix any possible issues.

  1. I think this is a great idea with regards to the outsourcing of freelance writers and promotions. I can definitely attribute to wanting to get things done faster on a daily basis but then look at my daily productivity and sense that I am not maximising my time and so maybe better renewing my goals along with a daily plan and then if I’m not satisfied to possibly look at fivver.
What are your thoughts on this?
    Thank you
    Paul

    1. Hi Paul,

If you have an online business that needs content, you decide to hire writers or do the job by yourself. I cannot tell you when to do it or if you must do it.

My only advice is that you must know what you are looking for when you think that a writer could help. Then, you must give specific instructions to the writer.

Most people when outsourcing their writing tasks, give the title or the keyword to the writer and expect to make it everything perfect.

It can work if you hire an expensive writer. But when you get content for 5-10 dollars, the writer does not know anything about SEO or copywriting. They just want to make a few extra dollars by writing articles.

So, give instructions to take exactly what you want. If you want small paragraphs, let the writer know about it. If you want a keyword to be included in specific parts of the content, ask for it.

      I hope that helps.

As a buyer Fiverr is a beware situation. If you are aware of what it is you are asking for and what you need to be done you can ask questions about the seller’s process before making a purchase. You also need to realize these are people starting out in the business, if you need an expert you need to look at niche specific freelancer sites.

Seller beware is that you need to know or be willing to learn how to market yourself and your gigs. You can’t just plaster your links on social media and expect to succeed. You can get some good income, I have a contact who is doing $150 a day in extra income from Fiverr but it’s taken some time to get the feedback to make it happen.

Overall I have used Fiverr to hire Ghostwriters and as stated in the article above they have great video producers and graphic artist but if you need SEO work or Traffic Generation you need to know something about these and ask a lot of questions before choosing a provider.

    1. Hi Andy,

I have heard many success stories from people who made money on Fiverr. It is realistic to earn $150 per day when you are an established seller and you have moved up the levels.

When you want to make a consistent income on Fiverr, you must threat your gigs as your business. You want to improve them, find more customers, overcome the competition, scale them with relevant services, etc.

It’s true that sometimes you cannot find exactly what you want. However, most of the times, you will be fine if you do your research on Fiverr.

  3. Hey there,

I have been having this thought of using fiverr to outsource some services I need done on my website although I have been having second thoughts about it.

I was told by a friend of mine that a good number of folks who work there have been involved in doing fake testimonials for people, and the website has now become poorly reputed.

Most people are now recommending up work more. What is your say on this?

    1. You can find on Fiverr any service that an online business may need. If you want fake testimonials, you will find them on Fiverr.

There are many weird services. That’s true. Some people sell fake traffic, spammy backlinks, spammy posts on social media and more.

It’s a huge marketplace, and everyone is responsible for what he/she sells.

For example, if you visit eBay or Amazon, you can find good and bad sellers, bad and good products.

You cannot blame the marketplaces for all of the above. It is your choice to avoid the bad places on the internet, on these marketplaces,  or the real world.

If you want to work on Fiverr, you can give it a try. It’s not for everyone, but many people enjoy it.

  4. I’ve tried Fiverr before for both Gigs and selling Gigs.

It’s a great marketplace, but by no means is it perfect.

Even though I bought some good cheap services for my blog, one or two of them didn’t live up to expectations and delivered poor results.

As for trying to sell my services, I created about 5 – 7 which I thought offered heaps of value. They received plenty of clicks but no sales.

Perhaps I didn’t give it enough time or I just didn’t create enough Gigs. Who knows.

It can be a profitable platform for folks who really apply themselves and go above and beyond, but it’s not easy for getting started like you say.

Personally, I would rather be a buyer than a seller. But I guess we all have different needs as online business owners.

I appreciate the review, and Fiverr is worth testing out for both buyers and sellers. 🙂

    Neil

    1. Hi Neil and thanks for sharing your experience.

Most people who join as buyers at the first time, they want some cheap services like articles, images, videos, etc.

You will not always get what you want, but on average it’s the cheaper way to outsource an online business.

About your effort to sell services, I think that you decided to let it go early. As I mentioned above, there is too much competition.

      Here is a little trick:

Check the top sellers in your niche. Order by one or two of them to see the quality of their services.

Then create a new gig, that offers much more than their gigs in quality and quantity. It will take only a few hours or days to get your first order.

To make sure that your people see your gig, go to the buyer requests and you all your available offers every day.

Again you will start slow. It will take weeks or months to start earning enough orders per day to make a part-time income. But it is achievable.

  5. Fiverr should be given a trial and see what rolls out of it. Since it has different stages one can grow into. It can also serve as a point of contact to a slow and steady business. A blog videos could serve as a gig which could be helpful to clients. There are different untrusted parties in fiverr which means a potential user has to be very careful and calculative

    1. Hi John, Fiverr is a free site to join.

I am not sure if you are interested in getting started as a seller or a buyer.

You can be a seller for free. If you are a buyer, you can contact the sellers for more information before ordering. It’s an online marketplace for service, and the sellers are individuals or small companies. You need to do some research.

  6. I’ve hired a few gigs on Fiverr over the years, but in my experience the results haven’t been great. Probably depends on what type of gig you’re hiring, I guess. One of mine was for X amount of website traffic, but I think it was all bot traffic and useless.

Fiverr looks like a great platform to get things like professional presentation videos made and things like that, but I haven’t used it for that yet.

How’s your overall experience with Fiverr been?

    1. I am happy with the gigs I have bought. They were some writing and logo gigs. Also, I have made a few sales to test it as a seller. It can work as well.

If you want to get traffic that will give you results, you must develop a strategy and attract people who are highly interested in your products or services, Darren. I prefer SEO as a free source of traffic, and for a paid one, I would try Facebook Ads or Google Adwords.

  7. Ilias,
Nice article, I was only vaguely familiar with Fiverr until I read your post. I was wondering if this platform supports buying and selling of physical products or services. In other words can I find someone who does massage or spray tanning? or is it just for web based services?

    1. Hi David, you can find any service that is relevant to an online business. There are some services that require physical action like flyers distribution but they are services that can be used for the promotion of a business.

  8. To be honest this is my first time of seeing proper Fiver review online. And you have done a great job reviewing everything about it.

I have used Fiver way back before and yes there are a couple of not very good vendors on it. But if you know what you want, you can always explain in details so the vendor can meet your expectation.

I like your honest review and I agree with your verdict. Thanks for sharing this.

    1. Thanks for the feedback, Richard.

Fiverr is a huge marketplace with people from many different countries. The only way to be sure about what you can expect is by communicating with the sellers or the buyers you work with.

  9. Hi, Ilias.

I’ve never used Fiverr, but I know of a friend who said he tried them a few times. He wanted an article written to be able to post it on his website, but both times, and by two different sources, the work he was given was full of grammatical errors and typos.

His experience had sort of put me off Fiverr for a while. I might try them myself one day, just to see how things go, but I hope my results won’t be as bad as my friend’s.

Your article about this service is great!

    James

    1. When you get $5 articles, usually you will order from gigs that do not know how to write well. The best way to avoid them is by asking a sample. There are some good writers even for $5 but you must find them.

If you do not want to spend your time on doing some research, you can hire more experienced writers but they are more expensive than $5.

  10. Hi Ilias

Indeed a great program. I have been using Fiverr for 2-3 times. Like you said sometimes you should pay more for better quality work and that’s true.

So far so good, I am actually not so well oriented with Fiverr, but for the few times, I used it seems its a legit platform and really has great support too.

I lived myself into your article, great work. As you’ve cleared it out, is what you get at Fiverr.

Just tell me something: What if I come upon a gig that I suspect not having delivered the right service or to the suspicion of a scam, what is the procedure to follow then?
    Great article, thanks

    -Engelhardt

    1. Hi Engelhardt,

You cannot trust every Fiverr gig and every person on the platform. So, in the beginning, make sure that you order from someone who can do the job.

It is ok to order from people with no reviews if you are looking for a better service at the lowest price. However, you can contact them, ask questions and samples, check his response time and anything else that could help you to take a decision. I would check a few Fiverr gigs before placing my order.

If you do some research, you will avoid most of the scammy or low-quality gigs.

But still, there is a small possibility to be unlucky. If that’s the case, contact the seller and ask your money back. Most sellers will agree and the issue will be over. They want to avoid the bad reviews because they are bad for their rankings and they can reduce the buyers.

If they keep the money and do not deliver as promised, contact support and give them a one-star review to protect other users.

Fiverr will investigate the problem and if you are right, it’s possible to delete the seller and give your money back.

  11. Hi Ilias

As an online marketer I have used Fiverr a lot, mostly for small graphics and design projects since this is something I’d rather outsource to somebody with skills and talent.

I’ve bought some truly amazing gigs and then there have also been some total duds. It’s to be expected though and with time you learn how to filter out risky sellers.

I agree with you though, if you want quality, you have to pay a bit more for it, but it’s worth it in the end.

By the way, do you always have to choose from an existing gig or can you also create a job spec and have sellers apply?

    Thanks for the great review.

    ~Mark
